Staircase of Our Dreams…

Materials Used: Red Oak Wood with 50% Aged Wheat Stain & 50% Paint Thinner, Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black

When my husband and I moved into our home, I had big hopes and dreams of what our staircase could and would look like. But, like most people, I put off this project as I knew it would be our biggest design feat in our home.

We were in luck as we had a couple of Engineer friends that had worked on staircases, and they were able to give us some guidance. I would say that seeking tips and tricks from anyone that you know that has remodeled a staircase would be extremely beneficial as there are a million ways to go about a staircase re-design.

Here are some of the biggest tips I learned along the way!

  • If you are removing drywall have a couple of extra helping hands! Cutting out huge chunks of the wall can make a big mess, but if you have someone carrying out the pieces immediately it is helpful!

  • Borrow or purchase a laser level as this will help immensely when working on your custom railing. Look at sourcing your railing pieces at your local staircase shop.

  • Measure twice and then measure again you will need to have no larger than 4 inches in between your railing post to meet code.

  • Research your local and state regulations for staircases to make sure you are building everything to code.

  • When drilling holes for your railing, use painters tape to pencil mark out and divide the quantity that you plan on using.

  • Lastly patience, patience, patience it will all be worth it to have a beautifully crafted staircase that you have personally re-designed.

  • Don’t be afraid to be bold and creative!
